Life after leaving
Leaving an abusive relationship is a huge and courageous step. It can bring relief — but also many practical challenges and questions. From finding a safe place to live, to arranging schooling for your children, to working out how to support yourself financially, life after leaving can feel overwhelming. At Nottingham Central Women’s Aid, we’re here to help you navigate this transition and start rebuilding your life.
Our specialist team offers ongoing emotional support to help you process your experiences and move forward, free from fear. We’ll help you find practical solutions and connect you with the right services so you don’t have to go through it alone.

Housing
If you leave your home because of domestic abuse and fear returning, your local authority may have a legal duty to help you. Domestic abuse includes coercive or controlling behaviour, threats, violence, and other forms of abuse — psychological, physical, sexual, financial, or emotional.
Under the law, local authorities cannot require proof of abuse before acting. They must investigate your case and provide advice.
For more information, visit your local authority housing office or read the Homelessness Code of Guidance.

You may be entitled to benefits such as:
-
Housing Benefit
-
Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA) or Employment and Support Allowance (ESA)
-
Universal Credit
-
