Everyone’s situation is different, so choose the actions that work best for you. You don’t have to do this alone — we’re here to help you every step of the way.

Tips to keep you safe

Here are some practical tips and steps to help you feel safe and supported as you begin this new chapter

Consider Going to a Refuge

Refuges, like ours, offer a safe place for you and your children, along with emotional support, practical help, and access to resources to start rebuilding your life.

You can be referred to a refuge by calling the National Domestic Violence Helpline on 0808 2000 247 or get in touch with us directly to check availability on 03303 551122.

Secure Your Phone & Devices

Abusers may try to track your location or monitor your activity. You can read our full advice on hiding your mobile location, but the safest option is to get a new phone and number. If this isn’t possible, you might want to reset your phone to factory settings to remove any tracking tools. Don’t forget to back up important information before wiping your device.

Find out how to reset your Android or Apple device safely.

Also, remember that other devices — like iPods, tablets or laptops — can also be used to track you, so consider turning off location services or leaving behind “smart” devices.

You can read more advice on turning off location services on our how to cover my tracks online page.

Limit Social Media Use

Social networks can unintentionally reveal your location or personal details. Avoid posting information or photos that could give away your whereabouts. You don’t want information about what you’re doing or who you’re friends with to be public. You don’t know who could be friends with your abuser.

Check your privacy settings, log out of all devices, change your passwords, and keep your profile private. Remember: photos often contain location data — so avoid posting them.

Don’t forget to log out

If you use social media or any site that requires a login, always log out when you finish. Otherwise, someone else could access your accounts.

Change Your Routines

If possible, vary your travel routes, where you shop, and other daily patterns. This can help protect your privacy and safety.

Consider a Restraining Order

A refuge like ours, or other Women’s Aid services, can help you explore legal safety options, including restraining orders. You can also speak to a family solicitor.

You can find out more about injunctions and how to file them on either:

Secure Your Accounts

Change all passwords and PINs, and cancel bank statements or card details that could reveal your location.

Stay Safe at Work

If you feel comfortable, let your workplace know about your situation. Ask for security support, a change of office location, or escort services if needed.

Protect Your Children

Talk to your children about what to do if they are approached by your abuser. Inform their school or nursery of any changes to who collects them and when.

Be Vigilant

Keep your phone with you at all times and stay aware of your surroundings. Have emergency numbers saved so they are easy to call.

Document icon

Document Everything

If abuse continues, keep records of any contact, harassment, or stalking. Written notes, photos, or video evidence can help if you later report the abuse.

Keep Loved Ones Informed

Share your location and plans with someone you trust. Arrange check-in times so someone always knows you’re safe.

Moving to a New Home?

If you have moved or are moving:

  • Consider window and door locks, outdoor lighting, an alarm system, steel doors, and smoke detectors.

  • Choose a location with plenty of neighbours and avoid secluded areas.

  • Keep your new address confidential — a PO Box may help.
